The Somerset and Dorset Railway ran from Bath Junction to Broadstone, with branches to Burnham on Sea, Bridgwater, Glastonbury to Wells and Corfe Mullen to Wimborne, with running rights between Bath Junction and Bath Green Park and Broadstone to Bournemouth West.

The smaller branches (Bridgwater and Wells) were closed in the 1950s. The section between Burnham and Highbridge closed to most trains in the early 1960s. The Wimborne section closed in the 1930s.

The main line and branch (Evercreech Junction to Highbridge) closed to passengers on 6 March 1966. Short sections were retained for freight use only, these all succumbing by 1975.

There are three preservation groups currently on the S&D, at Midsomer Norton, near Templecombe (Gartell Railway, 2 foot gauge) and Shillingstone.
